Fly American from Dallas/Fort Worth to Chicago

As a seasoned traveller, I understand that the journey is as important as the destination. With that in mind, I recount to you my recent sojourn on American Airlines from Dallas/Fort Worth all the way to Chicago, which just so happens to still be in Texas due to an amusing miscalculation on my part - but let’s not delve into those minor details just yet.

Any seasoned airborne adventurer knows about the all-too-familiar dance of airfare fluctuation. One moment, the cost of a round-trip ticket from Dallas to Chicago is reasonably affordable, the next, it begs for the donation of your first-born child. My personal lottery jackpot moment happened after hitting refresh for the 67th time, I scored a round-trip ticket in Economy class that was relatively painless - as painless as the sum of monthly bills can be. Bravo, American Airlines!

Here's a secret: booking direct flights on a Tuesday afternoon while standing on one leg and chanting incantations in ancient languages didn't get me cheaper flights. It earned me awkward stares from colleagues in the office though. Hilariously, it seems the best time to book a flight is actually rooted in reality - a dull Tuesday afternoon where you have nothing better to do than peruse the web aimlessly.

In the spirit of intellectual curiosity, I tentatively booked a "business class" upgrade for the return journey. While it did offer a slightly burgundy rather than blue seat cover, the anticipation of sipping champagne in a crystal flute was cruelly replaced by a carton of apple juice. Well played, American Airlines, your prowess in maintaining an air of exclusivity for the front of the plane remains unbroken.

Don't even get me started on the mileage program. Apparently, jetting off every month to locations most people can't pronounce or locate on a map equates to just enough points to be rewarded with a warm can of carbonated drink. Winning again!

The epitome of this delightful satire though, my dear soon-to-be-footloose readers, was the in-flight services. Two hours in, making do with the slightly claustrophobic dimensions of my economy class seat, the excitement of a meal service commenced. The unveiling of the so-called dinner was akin to the introduction of an unpopular candidate at an election rally - you know it's going to be disappointing, but you play along in good humour.

The flight duration seemed punctuated with comically ill-timed announcements (right when I was getting to the good part of the in-flight audio book), the seat belt sign would stunningly illuminate, and the captain would nonchalantly declare turbulence, as though he just remembered to turn off the stove before leaving the house.

Despite being aware that the airline industry is far from perfect, it is imperative to remember that a sense of humour can make any journey not only bearable, but also an absolute spectacle.
