Flying on American Airlines from Reno to Miami
Well, there we were, 8 one-way tickets deep, Reno to Miami, staring down the Ascending Stairmaster of Sky-High Airfares, wondering if we'd soon be forced to sell our kidney just to avoid going bankrupt. A walk in the park this sure was - if the park happened to be Jurassic World, and we were its unsuspecting guests.
Sadly, a direct flight between Reno and Miami is an elusive creature, more rare than a tactful internet comment. Ironic, isn't it? One would think in this era where humans are planning galactic trips to Mars and beyond, we'd be able to figure out a direct flight between two American metropolises. As it turns out, American Airlines, the supposedly 'World's Largest Airline', still deems it suitable to make us experience the joy of a connecting flight. Something about building character, or so I assumed.
But oh, it gets better. The slingshot ride from Reno to the lavish Miami doesn't just come with the thrill of a couple of layovers, but you also have the privilege of a glorious red-eye flight! Kudos to you if you relish the night watchman’s routine, but for those worryingly wide awake at 30,000 feet while the rest of the world snoozes peacefully, well, I hold my sympathies.
For those few lucky, or shall I say, blessed souls who manage to snag that elusive last-minute flight deal - I commend your divine intervention. Apparently, we mere mortals without the blessing of the travel gods aren't so fortunate. Instead, we get to play the exciting game of 'Who Wants To Be the Last to Book?', where the prize is paying exorbitantly high fares for seats that feel closer to the lavatory than Miami.
Nonetheless, we were flying - and in economy class, which as they say, is always a fine dining experience away from a culinary awards gala. I must unreservedly confess, those vacuum-sealed sandwiches have an uncanny knack of making me reminiscing about school cafeteria food. At least, the domestic flights ensure a frequent flyer would grow immune to air sickness by the sheer trial of in-flight meals, if nothing else.
On bright note, it turns out that American Airlines has a fairly generous baggage allowance. Or at least they consider it to be. Apparently, we are welcomed to bring an entire small apartment worth of luggage as long as we can fit it into a 22x14x9 inch suitcase. Oh well, I suppose my hopes for inflight DIY furniture assembly will have to be curtailed.
Buckle up, voyagers! The Reno to Miami hyper-jump is a roller-coaster that's guaranteed to make you consider spending the rest of your days on a horse-drawn carriage. The joys of modern aviation, eh?
So fear not fellow travelers, even with a few detours, a questionable meal or two, and the minor inconvenience of selling a non-essential organ to fund the trip – Miami still awaits, pulsing with life, ready to make you forget the airborne odyssey that got you there. Remember, the travel gods work in mysterious ways; at least, that's the reassurance I offer myself as I type this at 3:25 AM in a connecting airport, somewhere between here and my first mimosa on Miami beach.
